Have you ever had to take a family member to court?

Long story short, my cousin and I grew up more like brothers than cousins, we’ve always been very close. Earlier this year I lent him a substantial amount of money. He signed an agreement with a payment schedule. I have been very patient with him but now I really need the $ back to support my family.

He has not paid a dime back and was supposed to start monthly payments in April. For the most part he avoids me, when we do talk he gives BS ‘check is in the mail’ type excuses.

I’m leaning towards small claims court. Have any of you done this? Did it completely ruin the relationship?
I’ve had open discussions with him and he is very well aware of my position. I’m prepared for the relationship to be impacted. From where I sit, it already has been due to the lack of respect and lies on his part.
